Dr. Marwa M. Afifi received her Bachelor Degree in Dental Surgery and Medicine (B.D.S) and Masters of Dental Surgery (M.D.S) from Alexandria University, Egypt. She obtained her Joint Ph.D from Georgia Institute of Technology (GATECH), GA, USA and Alexandria University, Egypt. During her PhD, she developed new approaches to target oral squamous cell carcinoma both in vitro and in vivo.  During her Postdoc in the Cappell lab, she focused on understanding how cells permanently exit the cell cycle and commit to senescence with an emphasis on early carcinogenesis. She discovered that Myc degradation underlies the irreversibility of cell cycle arrest during senescence. Dr. Afifi is currently a Research Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
