Some viruses can lead to cancer. For example, human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical and other cancers, Epstein–Barr virus can cause many types of lymphoma and hepatitis B or C viruses can lead to liver cancer. CCR researchers are studying the mechanisms through which viruses infect cells and are identifying new viruses that may be associated with cancer.
