Dr. Ziegelbauer was the first to report using pulse labeling of proteins coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to discover human targets of herpesvirus microRNAs. His recent research has discovered functions of viral microRNAs related to inhibiting apoptosis, evading immune responses, and promoting angiogenesis. Ongoing research focuses on networks and pathways redundantly targeted by multiple viral microRNAs and circular RNAs. Using a variety of techniques, these methods will lead to the discovery of new therapeutic targets for inhibiting viral oncogenesis.
