About

The NCI Center for Cancer Research’s Neuro-Oncology Branch (NOB) launched in 2000 with the goal of improving treatment and outcomes for adults with primary brain and spine tumors. To fulfill this mission, the NOB:

  • Leads robust research programs in immunology, cancer metabolism, cancer stem cell biology, molecular and cell biology, translational research, and patient outcomes, which transfer scientific discoveries to clinical care
  • Spearheads clinical trials that improve treatment options for brain and spine tumor patients, and help them live longer, healthier lives
  • Oversees exceptional training programs—from summer internships to postdoctoral and research fellowships—that shape the next generation of healthcare professionals
  • Develops and disseminates educational content to patients, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals

Neuro-Oncology Clinic

Our Neuro-Oncology Clinic, located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, offers patients expert evaluation, examinations, tests, and imaging; advanced neurosurgery and radiation therapy; and treatments based on the genetic characteristics of a person’s specific tumor type. Patients at the NIH Clinical Center consent to participate in research studies and are treated without charge.

NCI-CONNECT Rare Brain and Spine Tumor Network

The NOB also manages an initiative supported by the Cancer Moonshot℠ called NCI-CONNECT (Comprehensive Oncology Network Evaluating Rare CNS Tumors). NCI-CONNECT aims to advance our understanding of rare adult central nervous system (CNS) cancers by establishing and fostering patient-advocacy-provider partnerships and networks to improve approaches to care and treatment.
