What We Do:
The Hematopathology Section of the Laboratory of Pathology, NCI, offers expert diagnostic services in the field of hematopathology. The staff provides assistance in the diagnosis and classification of reactive and neoplastic lymphoproliferative disorders, immunodeficiency states, and diverse hematological malignancies. We provide consultative and collaborative services to physicians in the National Cancer Institute, as well as to physicians studying patients with hematolymphoid disorders in other institutes, in particular NIAID, NHLBI, and NIAMSD.
Outside specimens should be submitted through the Laboratory of Pathology Surgical Pathology Service, with an order entered in CRIS. Under special instructions, please note: ATTENTION, HEMATOPATHOLOGY. For adequate diagnostic evaluation, paraffin blocks and/or unstained charged slides (15 or more is preferable) should be included with representative H&E-stained slides. In-House specimens from patients in the Clinical Center should be submitted unfixed in saline to the Hematopathology Clinical Laboratory (see below)>
Hematopathology Consultations (Non-NIH Physicians)
The staff of the Hematopathology Section provides consultation in selected cases of diagnostic difficulty. The Section is not a routine reference laboratory and does not accept cases for routine second opinions or for primary immunophenotyping. If you wish to submit a case in consultation, please contact the Hematopathology office at 301-480-8040 for further instructions.

Overview:
Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the technique used to detect proteins (antigens) in tissue and cytology samples. The procedure involves the use of prepared antibodies which attach to the antigen in question on the sample, and various types of detection systems that then provide the means to visualize the antigen. IHC is an ancillary technique routinely used in the work up of tissue pathology and cytology samples for the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of cancer patients. In addition, the method also provides the pathologist with information regarding identification of infectious organisms as well as differentiating malignant from benign processes.
