RESEARCH SUMMARY
Dr. Febres-Aldana is a surgical and molecular pathologist with expertise in thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, thymomas, and interstitial lung diseases (ILD). He practices general surgical pathology to support intramural protocols at NCI and has a nationwide and international referral surgical pathology consult in collaboration with Dr. Markku Miettinen. By implementing multi-omic molecular diagnostic techniques, Dr. Febres-Aldana works on high-quality morpho-molecular correlations for tumor classification and biomarker detection for precision oncology. He also collaborates with scientists across multiple NIH institutes, including groups specialized in non-neoplastic lung diseases at the NHLBI.
Areas of Expertise
Christopher A. Febres-Aldana, M.D.
Research
Dr. Febres-Aldana’s research goal is to integrate molecular signatures and digital pathology to understand the functional consequences of cancer genomes to improve tumor classification systems, fully characterize rare cancers, and discover novel biomarkers of therapy resistance.
Biography
Christopher A. Febres-Aldana, M.D.
Dr. Febres-Aldana received his M.D. from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Luis Razetti School of Medicine, in 2009, graduating with Honors in a research track. In 2020, he completed his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency training in the USA at the AM Rywlin MD Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, FL, where he served as chief resident for two academic years. This was followed by three-year fellowship training in Oncologic Surgical, Thoracic, and Molecular Genetic Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, NY. After completing his clinical training, Dr. Febres-Aldana joined the MSKCC Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program as a Senior Research Scientist. During his stay at MSKCC, he contributed to translational studies on profiling and targeting oncogene fusions and amplifications in models of lung cancer, sarcomas, and mesothelioma. Dr. Febres-Aldana joined the Laboratory of Pathology at NCI/NIH as a Staff Clinician and Assistant Research Physician in 2024. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in AP/CP and Molecular Genetic Pathology.
