RESEARCH SUMMARY
Dr. Febres-Aldana is a surgical and molecular pathologist with expertise in thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymomas, and interstitial lung diseases (ILD). His research goal is to integrate whole genome sequencing with multi-omics technologies and digital pathology to understand the functional and morpho-phenotypical consequences of structural variations of cancer genomes, discover novel biomarkers for precision oncology, improve current tumor classification systems, and fully characterize rare cancers. He collaborates with Dr. Anish Thomas on various translational research projects investigating the molecular pathobiology of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and small cell histologic transformation. He also supports multiple groups at the NHLBI in diagnosing and characterizing non-neoplastic diseases of the lung.

Biography
Christopher A. Febres-Aldana, M.D.
Dr. Febres-Aldana received his M.D. from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Luis Razetti School of Medicine, in 2009, graduating with Honors in a research track. In 2020, he completed his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency training in the USA at the AM Rywlin MD Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, FL, where he served as chief resident for two academic years. This was followed by three-year fellowship training in Oncologic Surgical, Thoracic, and Molecular Genetic Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, NY. After completing his clinical training, Dr. Febres-Aldana joined the MSKCC Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program as a Senior Research Scientist. During his stay at MSKCC, he contributed to seminal studies on SCLC and mesothelioma and worked along with Drs. Romel Somwar and Marc Ladanyi on profiling and targeting oncogene fusions and amplifications in models of lung cancer and sarcomas. Dr. Febres-Aldana joined the Laboratory of Pathology at NCI/NIH as a Staff Clinician and Assistant Research Physician in 2024. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in AP/CP and Molecular Genetic Pathology.
