About

The Thoracic Surgery Branch (TSB) conducts laboratory research pertaining to mechanisms of initiation and progression of thoracic malignancies; translates results of laboratory research to clinical protocols examining novel strategies to improve detection, diagnosis, and treatment of these neoplasms; mentors future leaders in thoracic surgical oncology and translational cancer research; and provides comprehensive clinical support for all patients with thoracic surgical issues at the NIH Clinical Center.

Our highly trained physicians develop and conduct a wide range of clinical trials in a quest to develop the medicines of tomorrow for patients with cancer, HIV or immunodeficiency disorders. All of our trials take place at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD, the world's largest research hospital, and through telehealth. Once you are enrolled in a clinical trial at the Clinical Center, medical care is free.

Patients & Providers

As part of our approach to patient care, we provide a number of natural history and treatment protocols for thoracic cancers. For instance, we offer molecular analysis of tumors, targeted drug therapies and innovative surgical procedures. Patients are provided guidance and assistance with appointments, travel, counseling and social support. We believe it is important to collaborate with our patients’ primary care physicians in order to provide expert continuity of care.
