Mae Hurtado-Thiele joined the Experimental Immunology Branch of the National Cancer Institute as a postbaccalaureate fellow in July 2023. She earned her degree in Genetics and Genomics with certificates in French and Leadership from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. During her undergraduate research, she focused on studying the role of acylcarnitines in insulin signaling during thermogenesis in brown adipocytes. Currently, she is investigating how T-BET regulates the functions of Th17 cells, including their egress, migration, and plasticity during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a murine model of multiple sclerosis. Following her fellowship in the lab of Dr. Vanja Lazarevic, Mae plans to pursue an MD/PhD.
