RESEARCH SUMMARY
Kazi obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh followed by a Master of Science degree from Yamaguchi University in Japan. For his Ph.D. studies, he worked with Dr. Christopher West at the University of Georgia. In 2017, Kazi joined the Compton Lab as a postdoctoral fellow. Here, Kazi uses comparative genomics, cell biology, and virology to describe host-virus interactions, with a focus on characterizing the mechanism of interferon-induced transmembrane (IFITM) proteins. Using an evolution-guided approach, he has discovered novel determinants of IFITM function by taking into account the known activities of related proteins in the CD225 family. Outside the lab, he likes to read novels, play cricket, and spend time with his family.
