Our hope and vision for our trainees are not only that they are scientifically productive and technically proficient but that they become well-rounded scientists who continue to perpetuate the NCI’s mission to advance scientific knowledge and help all people live longer, healthier lives.
Overview
The Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Genetics (LCBG) provides training in presentation skills and frequent opportunities for our trainees to present their research. Beginning in Fall 2023, we are launching a new interlab series, LCBG Research Talks. The goal of this series is to create regular opportunities for researchers to present and discuss their findings with the diverse LCBG audience and receive formal constructive feedback from peers and a team of principal investigators (PIs). This forum is also expected to familiarize one’s research within the LCBG community, foster collaboration and create networking opportunities.
Structure
LCBG Research Talks feature two 20-minute presentations, with 10 minutes allotted for questions after each presentation. In each presentation, postdocs, postbacs and staff scientists showcase their latest findings and engage in lively scientific discussions. Following the presentations, a small group of PIs provide verbal feedback, and peers submit feedback via an electronic form.
This series is unique in that feedback mechanisms are incorporated into its structure. By participating in this exercise, presenters will hone their presentation skills and become better scientific communicators.
Other opportunities
In addition to LCBG Research Talks, we also host a weekly LCBG Seminar that features presentations by distinguished speakers from within the NIH and around the world. When invited speakers are on-site, trainees are provided with the opportunity to coordinate a lunch discussion session with the speaker. These luncheons provide valuable networking opportunities and a venue to obtain advice directly from thought leaders in the field.
