Each year, 10 to 11 new fellows join the NIH Hematology Oncology Fellowship on July 1. After a week-long orientation to our large campus and learning the ins and outs of the iconic Building 10, they begin their rotations both on and off campus. By the end of their first year, single-boarding fellows are ready to begin their research time.
Fellows who are double-boarding in hematology and oncology spend the first six months of their second year completing their rotations. Then they join their singe-boarding colleagues in focusing on their research. (See Pathway to Research Independence on the Fellowship Experience page for more information.) At the end of their second year, single-boarding fellows are ready to graduate (but they often stay to continue their research during their guaranteed third year).
Whether they are single- or double-boarding, all NIH hematology oncology fellows are guaranteed three years of fellowship. Double-boarding fellows graduate at the end of their third year.
A small percentage of our fellows stay for four years if they are on the ABIM Research Pathway or also doing pediatric hematology and/or oncology. After our fellows graduate, the majority stay in academia, many by staying on at NIH. A percentage of our fellows also go on to work in community and/or hybrid practices, others go to industry, and some move to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to serve as regulators.
