RESEARCH SUMMARY

Dr. Cunningham completed his undergraduate degree in Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Limerick in Ireland. From there, he moved to Central Michigan University for a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, where his research focused on the effects of high protein diets on skeletal muscle. His Ph.D. was completed in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Missouri under the supervision of Dr. Scott R. Rector. His research involved examining the effects of exercise and endothelial nitric oxide synthase manipulation on mitochondrial dysfunction during nonalcoholic fatty liver disease development. In 2020, Dr. Cunningham accepted a position in Dr. Natalie Porat-Shliom’s lab at the NCI to investigate the effects of metabolic perturbations on mitochondrial dynamics in the liver.
