RESEARCH SUMMARY
Patrick Zhao is a bioinformatics scientist who developed innovative computational biology methods, bioinformatics tools, web servers, and databases and applied them in a wide range of genomics research, including human, mouse, plant, and fungal genomics. At the Genetics Branch OMICS Bioinformatics Facility of NCI, he leads a team of bioinformaticians in advancing omics, big data analytics, and computing to support cancer genomics research and biomedical innovations in clinical cancer care.
Areas of Expertise
Research
As the head of OMICS Bioinformatics Facility, Dr. Zhao is interested in advancing and deploying omics analytics, big data, artificial intelligence, and computing to drive bioinformatics, cancer genetics and genomics research, and biomedical innovations in clinical cancer care at the Genetics Branch.
Biography
Patrick X. Zhao, Ph.D.
Dr. Zhao studied information science at the Graduate School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, between 1997 and 2000. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Communication and Information Systems in July 2000, he joined Dr. Eugenia Wang's Lab as a post-doc then bioinformatics research scientist at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Between 2000 and 2004, Dr. Zhao actively collaborated with Dr. Wang's wet lab team in developing human and mouse genomics, bioinformatics methods, and tools to discover genes and biological networks essential to determining the normal aging process, particularly those related to successful aging in centenarians. In July 2004, Dr. Zhao joined the Noble Research Institute as a Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics under the leadership of Dr. Richard A. Dixon. He continued his research at the Noble Research Institute as a Senior Principal Investigator, Associate Professor then Professor of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology till 2021, developing and applying genomics, bioinformatics, and computation biology technologies in basic plant science research, trait-related gene and biological network discovery, functional genomics, and biotech applications.
Currently, Dr. Zhao serves as Head of OMICS Bioinformatics Facility, under the direction of Drs. Paul S. Meltzer and Javed Khan at the Genetics Branch of the National Cancer Institute, with which he has been since January 2022.
