Areas of Expertise
Nishanth Ulhas Nair, Ph.D.
Research
Dr. Nishanth Ulhas Nair trained as a computational biologist and works in the fields of cancer biology, computational and systems biology, and bioinformatics. His research spans the field of genetic interactions like synthetic lethality/rescue so as to predict drug response prediction and identify clinically-relevant drug combinations. At NCI, Dr. Nair has been working on multiple projects, including cancer cell migration, studying cancer risk across species, predicting drug response in targeted and immunotherapy, identifying biomarkers associated with mesothelioma patient survival, and identifying synergistic drug combinations in non-small cell lung cancer. Recently, Dr. Nair has also been involved in identifying new drug targets for COVID-19.
Previously, Dr. Nair was involved in identifying key functional genes in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, building cell type trees for histone modification data, and developing tools for exploring ChIP-Seq datasets.

Biography
Nishanth Ulhas Nair, Ph.D.
Dr. Nishanth Ulhas Nair received his Master of Science (Engg.) degree in the field of signal processing and automatic speech recognition at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India. Dr. Nair won the best thesis award for his research work there. Then Dr. Nair received his Ph.D. in computational biology from the Department of Computer and Communication Sciences at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. His work during his Ph.D. won him the best paper award at an important computational biology conference. Dr. Nair later joined the University of Maryland, College Park, for his postdoctoral research, and then joined the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute (NCI), as a Visiting Fellow where he was mentored by Dr. Eytan Ruppin. In January 2021, he became a Staff Scientist in the Cancer Data Science Laboratory at NCI.
