Biography
Melissa L Abel, M.D.
Dr. Abel joined the Genitourinary Malignancies Branch of the NCI in 2024 with a focus on prostate cancer. She began her career in cancer biology performing bench-to-bedside leukemia research at Oregon Health & Science University. She attended medical school at Duke University, where she was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowship for her research in cancer immunotherapy. She then completed her Internal Medicine internship and residency at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, before coming to the NIH for her medical oncology fellowship. During her fellowship, she performed translational and clinical research in the area of small cell neuroendocrine cancers, and was awarded an American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award for her research on small cell neuroendocrine prostate cancer. Additionally, she received the Herb Kotz Award for Excellence in Oncology and served as a Chief Fellow for the program.
