Training in Patient-Reported Outcomes

Postbaccalaureate Training at CCR OPCORe

OPCORe offers a variety of training opportunities for recent college graduates.  Trainees may spend one year (or several years) working with world-class researchers on NCI’s campuses in Bethesda, Maryland. The OPCORe group members engage with a diverse group of clinical researchers and cancer populations to support integrating patient-centered outcomes measures into innovative early phase trials.

Trainees working with this program will be exposed to the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and iHealth approaches to data collection and visualization, psychometric evaluation of measures and analysis of data within studies and across clinical studies, while working with the clinical team on these studies.

Training includes:

  • Didactic lectures
  • Weekly seminars with the OPCORe Associate Director, Senior Scientist and staff with discussions focused on research rigor and career planning
  • Hands on experience in use of COAs in clinical trials, including instruction on evaluation and use of measures, mentored training in administration of measures to cancer patients, and analysis, interpretation and reporting of results
  • Cross-focus observational experiences
  • Mentoring in training and public speaking

Who Can Apply?

  • Recent college graduates with a bachelor-of-science degree or the equivalent in the health sciences
  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents

How Do I Apply?

Apply via the Postbaccalaureate Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) at the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE).  After submitting your application, please email CCR.OPCORe@mail.nih.gov with your CV and statement of interest.

Other Training Opportunities in PROs

The OPCORe program is open to inquiry from administrators of the extensive range of clinical research training programs for trainees interested in exposure to the application of clinical outcomes assessments (COAs) in early phase cancer clinical trials.

If you are a current NIH trainee, please speak to your PI or program coordinator about how best to incorporate PROs into the training.
