Nataliya Buxbaum wins Magnetic Moments video competition

Nataliya P. Buxbaum, M.D., Assistant Clinical Investigator in the Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch, was named the overall winner of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine’s Magnetic Moments Competition. The competition is designed for investigators to use video to describe their MRI-related research for a general audience. Dr. Buxbaum’s video describes her research using tracers to better and more safely image tumors.

Julius Strauss discusses promising immunotherapy drug for patients with HPV-related cancers

Julius Strauss, M.D., Assistant Research Physician in the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Biology, discussed a promising immunotherapy drug for patients with HPV-related cancers in a recent NCI Cancer Currents blog post. According to results from a phase 1 clinical trial, 33 percent of the 36 patients on the trial with HPV-positive tumors responded to the drug, and four of the responses lasted longer than 18 months. “This drug is a promising agent for patients with HPV-related cancers and may potentially benefit these patients more than traditional checkpoint therapies,” said Dr. Strauss.

Brid Ryan cohosts NCI Minority Health Month Facebook Live

The National Cancer Institute hosted a Facebook Live entitled, “A Dialogue on Cancer Disparities, Prevention, and Research.”The event featured Brid M. Ryan, Ph.D., M.P.H., Investigator in the Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis, as well as Worta McCaskill-Stevens, M.D., M.S., from the Division of Cancer Prevention, and Christina Dieli-Conwright, Ph.D., M.P.H., from the University of Southern California. They discussed cancer disparities and the work being done to help reduce them.

Marston Linehan receives 2019 Urology Care Foundation Distinguished Mentor award

Marston Linehan, M.D., Chief of the Urologic Oncology Branch, has received the 2019 Urology Care Foundation Distinguished Mentor award. The award recognizes Dr. Linehan’s outstanding track record of fostering the next generation of urologic researchers by providing excellent training and guidance to early-career investigators.

Elaine Jaffe receives the 2019 USCAP Board’s Distinguished Pathologist award

Elaine Jaffe, M.D., Senior Investigator in the Laboratory of Pathology, has received the 2019 United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Board’s Distinguished Pathologist award. The award recognizes an individual for making major contributions to pathology over the years.

CCR staff receive funding from the Department of Defense

Congratulations to the CCR staff who have received funding from the Department of Defense (DoD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP). The CDMRP office manages medical research programs in breast, prostate and ovarian cancers, neurofibromatosis, military health and other specified areas.

Louis Staudt elected as a fellow of the AACR Academy

Louis Staudt, M.D., Ph.D., Co-Chief of the Lymphoid Malignancies Branch, was elected to the 2019 class of fellows of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Academy. The mission of the AACR Academy is to recognize and honor distinguished scientists whose major scientific contributions have propelled significant innovation and progress against cancer, and to leverage the expertise of the global brain trust of fellows of the AACR Academy to advance the mission of the AACR to prevent and cure all cancers through research, education, communication and collaboration.

Elaine Jaffe inducted as honorary fellow of the Royal College of Pathology of Australasia

Elaine Jaffe, M.D., Senior Investigator in the Laboratory of Pathology, was recently inducted as an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Pathology of Australasia. The fellowship recognizes the work and publications of a haematophathologist that have influenced and improved haematopathology practice worldwide.

Steve Rosenberg receives Szent-Györgi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research

Steve Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of the Surgery Branch, has received the 2019 Szent-Györgi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research. The award recognizes indivuduals with a seminal discovery or a body of work that has resulted in or led toward notable contributions to cancer prevention, diagnosis or treatment, and the discovery has had a lasting impact on the cancer field with a high direct impact of saving lives.
