SAXS Core Facility: New Users

Becoming a Core Facilities User

The following steps are applicable to anyone who would like to become a user of the CCR SAXS Core facilities. All users are required to follow the Core Facility User Polices.

The CCR SAXS Core Facility provides access to Synchrotron SAXS/WAXS at the 12 ID-B beamline of Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) through a Partner User Program (PUP). The CCR SAXS core has 9 shifts (eight hours per shift) beamtime per month excluding January, May and September which is the maintenance time of the beamline. The CCR SAXS Core Facility also provides access to in-house SAXS instruments. Currently, the CCR SAXS Core facility is open to intramural and extramural researchers free of charge. The following steps are applicable to anyone who would like to become a user of the CCR SAXS Core facilities.

If you are interested in becoming a user, please have your principal investigator contact Drs. Yun-Xing Wang and Lixin Fan. The request should contain a brief summary of the scientific project and the goals of the SAXS experiments. Principal Investigators (or Supervisors) of users must be informed of and authorize the planned use of the NCI SAXS core resource. The following is the contact information:

Synchrotron SAXS/WAXS Users

With approval, you will be added to a user list and get an email notification regarding the APS beamtime. For those who wish to send students, postdoctoral fellows, or staff to collect their own data at the APS beamline and who have no badge to APS, they should register as new users of APS through their webpage at https://www.aps.anl.gov/Users-Information. You will need to get a badge to ANL and complete the online training required by APS before you can work at the beamline. The APS user office will guide you through this procedure once you registered as an APS user. You should register at least a month earlier before your planned trip to the beamline. To request synchrotron beamtime, please refer to User Policies.

In-house SAXS Instrument Users

Once you become a user, you could ship or drop off your samples and the core staff would help to run the measurements. For users who want to participate in data collection or collect data by themselves, they should become “authorized users” in order to work at the SAXS instrument. You need to fill out and sign the “X-ray Program User Application Form,” get a dosimeter, and receive operation and safety training before you can work at the SAXS instrument.
