CCR Fellows and Young Investigators Association

CCR Fellows and Young Investigators Steering Committee

The CCR Fellows & Young Investigators (CCR-FYI) Association was organized by non-tenured and non-tenure-track M.D.s, Ph.D.s or the equivalent, graduate students, and postbaccalaureate intramural scientists to foster the professional advancement of member clinicians and scientists at CCR.

We work to:

  • Organize and promote educational activities such as training courses and seminars
  • Identify potential employment opportunities in traditional and non-traditional career paths
  • Organize the annual CCR-FYI Colloquium
  • Help orient new trainees
  • Facilitate communication and build a community among members

The CCR-FYI enhances the intramural training program, fosters communication among fellows and the CCR research community, and serves as a liaison to CCR senior management on programs affecting the training experience. Association members can volunteer to serve on the Steering Committee (SC). Membership to the CCR-FYI is not limited to CCR fellows and young investigators; fellows from other NCI DOCs may become members upon approval by voting members of the CCR-FYI Steering Committee. Please reach out to the SC co-chairs below with any questions.

CCR-FYI SC Subcommittees:

Newsletter

The CCR-FYI Newsletter is an online publication that focuses on topics of interest to fellows and early career scientists, with special editions summarizing the annual CCR-FYI Colloquium. Articles appearing in the Newsletter are written by NIH scientists and fellows, and is published quarterly. While targeted to the CCR community, the CCR-FYI Newsletter is a resource available to the community at large: all previous editions are available from the CCR-FYI wiki page.

For more information or to join our editorial team, contact Riley Metcalfe and Mukta Nag.

Colloquium

The Annual CCR-FYI Colloquium has been one of the most ambitious programs implemented by the CCR-FYI Steering Committee. Implemented in 2001, it has since become a long-standing component of the training program for more than 1000 current intramural fellows. The Colloquium is organized by CCR fellows with the help of the Office of Training and Education, CCT. The goals for the CCR-FYI Colloquium are to provide a forum to learn about the exciting groundbreaking research at the NCI and other institutions, to provide an opportunity for fellows to present their work to their peers, and to allow young scientists a chance to explore potential career paths. To achieve these goals, we invite basic and clinical cancer researchers and investigators from various research institutes across the U.S. as well as the within the NCI and NIH as guest speakers to share their work and interact with fellows. The Colloquium provides an opportunity for fellows to present their scientific work by participating in oral and poster presentations. We organize workshops that aim to promote career development for fellows and enhance their marketable skills. We also invite panelists from all aspects of the scientific community to provide our fellows with the opportunity to learn about the assortment of professional paths available to them and ways to be successful in their future career transition. Additionally, our survivorship speaker program gives fellows an in-depth understanding of the life of a cancer survivor and helps us all understand the purpose for our work in cancer biology. To learn more, visit the 2024 Colloquium website.

If interested in assisting with the planning of the 2024 CCR-FYI Colloquium, please contact Kathleen Reed or Ramesh Chingle.

Presentation and Communication Opportunities

Are you interested in improving your speaking and presentation skills?  If so, plan to attend and participate in the CCR Fellows' PASS and Seminar Series sponsored by the CCT Office of Training and Education and the CCR-FYI.  See more details below for each program

Fellows PASS (Presentation and Seminar Skills)

PASS (Presentation and Seminar Skills) is a two-part monthly series open to all CCR scientists.   This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who wishes to improve their presentation skills either for a meeting presentation or job talk. Participants are given the opportunity to both practice and polish their presentation skills.  During part one, fellows practice their presentation with a science communications expert during a one-on-one tutoring session, where participants receive feedback on style, content, delivery of message, etc. During part two, the participant presents their talk in front of colleagues and receives additional constructive feedback. The science communications expert will attend and provide additional feedback following the presentation. We will work with the fellow to arrange the tutoring session and follow-up presentation.

For more information or to sign up, contact Erika Ginsburg.

Fellows Seminar Series

The CCR-FYI Seminar Series is a monthly virtual WebEx series that provides fellows from all career stages the opportunity to hone their scientific communication skills while receiving constructive feedback on their science and presentation from their peers and from principal investigators. We aim to bring the fellows together to build a community where we can highlight the excellent research done by postdocs, postbacs, and graduate students while also fostering interactions and forming new collaborations. We are graciously supported by the CCR Office of the Director, CCT Office of Training and Education, and the CCR-FYI Steering Committee. This seminar series is open to CCR fellows from all campuses.

Find more information by visiting the CCR-FYI Seminar Series website or contact Kathy Easterday or Babul Ram.
