Dr. Tropea received his Ph.D. from the Department of Biological Sciences at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1987 under the direction of Professors Harold L. Segal and Richard T. Swank. After a three year postdoctoral training position with Dr. Alan D. Elbein at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Dr. Tropea joined the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in 1990 where he preformed research in the Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry, the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Metabolism and the Cellular and Molecular Endocrinology Branch. In 1995 he became Senior Staff Fellow in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and in 2000 accepted the position as Staff Scientist in the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory, Center for Cancer Research, the National Cancer Institute. In 2001 Dr. Tropea became head of the Protein Purification Core and in 2013 was promoted to Associate Scientist.
