Heidi H. Kong, M.D., M.H.Sc.
Investigator

Dr. Kong has advanced the understanding of the complexity of microbial communities of human skin in healthy individuals and patients with atopic dermatitis and several primary immunodeficiencies with associated eczematous skin. Her recent studies have identified differences in the skin microbial communities in these patient populations.

Dr. Kong combines clinical/translational research expertise with advanced genomic technologies to study skin microbes to gain insights into the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and to identify potential therapeutics for patients with this disease. She has active clinical studies for health volunteers and patients with atopic dermatitis.

Areas of Expertise
1) skin microbiome 2) clinical research 3) atopic dermatitis 4) metagenomics

Our group is focused on studying the skin microbiome in healthy individuals with the goal of expanding our understanding of host-microbe interactions. Previous work has investigated the diversity and distrubtion of bacterial and fungal skin communities in healthy adults.

We are also working to understand the role of microbes in eczematous skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis. Our prior work has studied the significant bacterial shifts in the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis as well as patients with primary immunodeficiency syndromes with eczematous skin conditions.

Scientific Focus Areas:
Clinical Research, Genetics and Genomics, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Dr. Kong received her undergraduate degree in biological sciences from Stanford University and obtained her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. She then completed her dermatology residency at Duke University. After completing clinical research fellowship in the Dermatology Branch and the Duke-NIH Masters Program in Clinical Research, Dr. Kong became an Assistant Clinical Investigator and worked with collaborators to establish the NIH Intramural Skin Microbiome Consortium. She is currently a tenure-track investigator.
