Communications Specialist - communications, writing, editing, news, social media

The NCI Center for Cancer Research has an exciting opportunity for a talented communicator to join our team and be part of the effort to find cures for cancer. We use creativity, teamwork and strategic planning to share our research advances, cutting-edge clinical trials and career opportunities. We are seeking an outstanding communications professional to oversee digital and hard-copy production of our research magazines, Milestones, Horizons and Landmarks, and manage the content of the CCR news page, which includes developing, assigning, writing, editing and posting content. The candidate serves as our primary team editor and must be comfortable proofreading internal and external communications content for clarity, tone, style and grammar to ensure they meet our high-quality standards and follow our style guide. As a member of our integrated team, incumbent will have other duties spanning internal and external communications and a wide variety of tactics such as creating and executing social media campaigns and contributing to strategic planning and internal communications.

REQUIRED SKILLS: To qualify for this position, the candidate must have: • Bachelor’s degree with minimum two years’ experience writing and editing for online publications or a master’s degree in journalism, science writing or related field • Excellent writing and editing skills as demonstrated by experience copy editing for either online or print publications and strong understanding of style and grammar.
PREFERRED SKILLS: The ideal candidate will also have one or more of the following: • Some education or experience in science, research and/or public health • Strong project management skills and attention to detail • Ability to multitask multiple projects • Ability to work effectively and flexibility as a team member in a fast-paced environment • Experience with social media and related analytics • Proficiency in or technical savvy in quickly learning multiple software, such as MSOffice, Adobe, Illustrator, Photoshop • Experience with SEO best practices

The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is home to nearly 250 basic and clinical research groups located on two campuses just outside of Washington, D.C.
