RESEARCH SUMMARY

Shiv Grewal has uncovered groundbreaking insights into heterochromatin assembly and epigenetic control of the genome. In addition to revealing that distinct histone methylation patterns define heterochromatin (closed) and euchromatin (open) regions of the genome, he has discovered fundamental mechanisms that target heterochromatin to repetitive elements and other locations throughout the genome. In particular, his discovery of the role of RNAi in heterochromatin formation was cited as “Breakthrough of the Year” (Science, 2002). He has further defined critical requirements for the epigenetic inheritance of heterochromatin domains and described how heterochromatin performs diverse regulatory functions to promote genome stability, adaptive gene control and 3D genome organization.
