Intramural Research Program
The National Cancer Institute is one of 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. Many students and faculty may be familiar with the NIH extramural program. Through its extramural grants program, the NCI supports scientists all over the world in a broad spectrum of research and research training activities. Perhaps less familiar is the fact that the NCI also maintains its own research laboratories and clinics on campuses in Frederick and Bethesda, Maryland, designated the Center for Cancer Research (CCR). In this intramural research program, CCR NCI laboratory researchers and practicing physicians form a unique partnership in cancer research and treatment (see program description, faculties). Research conducted in the intramural research program undergoes recurring peer review by a Board of Scientific Counselors, a panel of outside expert scientists.
